With today news: US Somali air strikes ‘kill many’ and U.S. says Somalia must not become terror haven
Because Somalia inherited weaknesses from the African continent, multi-tribal and ethnic system…etc, including the strategic location, which hit between Africa and the Middle East, controlling Bab El Mandeb Red-sea gate, and the long coastline on the Arabian Sea, not to mention — more importantly — the wealth of oil and gas potential, this potential and the geopolitical nature of this country, forced the western imperialism to trigger the weaknesses factor in Somalia.
The story starts with the rule of former Somali President Mohamed Siad Barre at the beginning of the 70s until the 90s. At that time, the United States confirmed without any doubt the existence of huge oil reserve in Somalia.
American oil companies (CONOCO, Emyco, Chevron…and many others) invested one billion dollars in exploitation.

FOUR AMERICAN PETROLEUM GIANTS HAD AGREEMENTS WITH THE AFRICAN NATION BEFORE ITS CIVIL WAR BEGAN. THEY COULD REAP BIG REWARDS IF PEACE IS RESTORED.
This prompted Washington to appoint Robert Oakley [an intelligence officers and one of the architects of what is known as the Iran-Contra scandal] as a special envoy to Somalia.
Ironically, and significantly that Oakley managed the business, and his country’s embassy in Somalia, from the headquarters of Conoco Petroleum company in Mogadishu!
However, the time was too short for Washington, since Mohammad Farah Aidid one of army generals revolts against Berre, and Somalia went into a civil war.
Many of the oil-rich wells were camouflaged and detailed maps are preserved until returning once again with a friendly, loyal regime.
Why Now?
Chinese oil companies are moving into Africa, including Somalia, in order to prevent of what happened to the Sudanese oil. The United States delegated Ethiopia the task on their behalf, to avoid the repetition of the failed operation carried out under the umbrella of the United Nations in 1993.
