Russia hasn't changed any of their policies and, for instance, hasn't agreed to supplying weapons to Syria - not yet. I think that the middle east would definitely benefit from a new cold war (including giving Iraqis the means to defend against the Americans - as you suggest) but the West will have to push a lot harder before we get there. On the other hand, Cheney *is* doing his best to stir up trouble in Georgia right now, and I notice also that Putin is saying that they found proof of US Special Forces personnel fighting with the Georgian army.
