Will the U.S. allows a military coup?
I think Adil Abd Al-Mahdi’s fears from a military coup in Iraq in his interview on Al-Arabiya, are based on report published on albayyna Al-Jadida newspaper few days ago [no link allowed, but look here in Arabic and here in English] say that there is a plot of coup orchestrated by the Americans and advised by Egypt after Iraq’s provincial election.
According to the newspaper, the Americans met with Baath Party leader Mizhir Al-Dulaimi in Amman - Jordan for 10 hours. Mizhir told the Americans that Ba’ath Party is dead with Saddam’s death and its comeback can only be arranged with new names.
Egypt in its role, recommended 45 names of former Iraqi officers to join an American military exercises in the United State.The newspaper says that the signs of this coup will be visible at the outcome of the provincial election; if the Kurds and the Shiites dominate the results then the plan will be implemented.
A very good article on Al-Qabas published today asks if a coup in Iraq would be approved by the Americans, in which the writer reminds us that not long time ago Chalabi expected a military coup in Iraq also.
He argues that if we exclude the reality that the Americans control Iraq, then these views are mirroring the politicians own fears from the recent situation and the feel that they are running in an empty circle.
The writer counts two factors make the Iraqi politician’s fear the Iraqi army:
The army has become somewhat away from the external influences as it was a year earlier, the growing military power makes defeat the active and the inactive militias linked to parties and politicians, who started to suggest and pressure Maliki government, to control the rapid growth of the army.
The army opened the return of a large number of officers and soldiers from the former army, which was administered and dominated by the Baath Party ideology and former officers who were active in the Ba’ath Party leadership are a reason for such fears.
However, the answer to the question whether the Americans allow a coup that retake all the arrangements to the zero point?
The answer is “NO” for sure, the Americans put all their eggs in the current Iraqi politician’s basket and they can afford to break these eggs.
But still, the Americans have a history of “coups” against their friends and on their policies. In this we can understand Chalabi’s and Adil abd Al-Mahdi fears.
