Awan learned that the Iraqi government decided to dig a ditch with 210 km long, [3 km deep ??] along the Syrian border. The project will be finished in two months.
Al-Hayat reported that Obama will try soon to contact the Iraqi leaders to end the security agreement issue. No further details about “how” and “when but the newspaper assured that the Iraqi Political Council will react positively on the final American draft.
The interesting part of the report is:
The [Iraqi] Government is not worried about the agreement itself, but the next U.S. administration headed by Obama, and the possibility of not approving the agreement and this is his constitutional right. We don’t have any U.S. guarantees, only a known American practice that the new president will not veto an agreements signed by his predecessor.
Yet, in other report the newspaper affirmed that government speaker Al-Dabagh said today:
The American amendments are not enough, there must be more changes in Washington need the approval of the Iraqi government.
Even the Constitutional Court ruled today that SOFA can be passed in the Iraqi parliament by the “simple majority”.
The explanation for these conflicting reports is that Al-Dabagh wants more changes in the agreement came after Sistani’s statement yesterday.
