Tarek Al-Hashimi’s website is blocked since yesterday to prevent Iraqis [especially abroad] from reading his update or to show their support, so I can not confirm all the information I will report here.
The parliament reached an agreement (while I am writing this), the voting process is on a new initiative made by INA to distribute the votes of the displaced Iraqis on the provinces (no further details, but MP Haider Al-Abadi thinks that Hashimi will veto the law again) [as far as I know, Barzani’s crisis is not solved yet].
But at least we have something revealed today, Sistani advised Shiites parties to avoid vetoing Hashimi’s veto.
Hashimi sent a letter (an answer to a letter sent to Hashimi by 12 blocs in the parliament) asking the parliament to discus three point:
- How the parliament is going to solve the seats of the Iraqis abroad issue!
- Do the parliament recognizes his veto as constitutional or not!
- The parliament must confirm that a delegation met with Hashimi and asked him to withdraw his veto.
The parliament will discus the letter today, but sending such letter is seen as a sign weakness from Hashimi, especially after reports published on Elaph say that the American ambassador in Baghdad Christopher Hill pressured Hashimi to withdraw his veto:
The U.S. ambassador Christopher Hill is seen moving between the corridors of the parliament contacting the Iraqi MPs, without giving any new proposals.
Another report says that the American ambassador, stayed for two hours talking to the MPs, there is no mention about pressure on Hashimi.
