It seems that there is a new cri­sis on its way, involved Iraqi Vice Pres­i­dent Al-Hashemi again, which will be a new polit­i­cal adver­tis­ing campaign.

Head of the Secu­rity and Defense Com­mit­tee in the par­lia­ment Hadi al-Amiri brought back the death sen­tences case of Chem­i­cal Ali, for­mer defense min­is­ter Sul­tan Hashim and for­mer chief of staff Hus­sein Rashi again, issued since two years ago.

Iraq’s pres­i­dency dilemma is the following:

Pres­i­dent Tal­a­bani, is a lawyer who has already signed the inter­na­tional con­dem­na­tion of the death sen­tences. As a Pres­i­dent of the Repub­lic, he leaves the death sen­tences to his three deputies to sign the orders on his behalf.

Adel Abdul Mahdi repeat­edly called for the exe­cu­tion of the three con­victed, and he already approved their execution.

The prob­lem for Al-Hashemi is dif­fer­ent. He does not have any objec­tion against the death penalty, but he found him­self fac­ing a prob­lem related to the death sen­tences issued against for­mer army offi­cers, his argu­ments are: 1) their actions are orders given by the for­mer regime, and they are not part of the regime. 2) They are all Sunni Arabs, (and he don’t want to loss the pop­u­lar­ity he gained by oppos­ing the elec­tion law).

While there is no dis­agree­ment on sign­ing the death sen­tence of Chem­i­cal Ali, Maliki’s gov­ern­ment and the Supreme Coun­cil asked the pres­i­den­tial coun­cil to sign the death sen­tence of the three in one war­rant collectively .

Hashemi believes that he has the author­ity to sign the exe­cu­tion orders, indi­vid­u­ally and not col­lec­tively. He pointed out that (the Pres­i­dency) is not obliged to sign the exe­cu­tion of sev­eral con­victs at one time and one signature.

While INA wants to speed up the exe­cu­tion of Chem­i­cal Ali as an achieve­ment for the com­ing elec­tion, Maliki’s elec­tion cam­paign is the exe­cu­tion of for­mer defense min­is­ter Sul­tan Hashim and for­mer chief of staff Hus­sein Rashid.

This “cri­sis” started to esca­late grad­u­ally, and in the com­ing days we will here more.
