It seems that there is a new crisis on its way, involved Iraqi Vice President Al-Hashemi again, which will be a new political advertising campaign.
Head of the Security and Defense Committee in the parliament Hadi al-Amiri brought back the death sentences case of Chemical Ali, former defense minister Sultan Hashim and former chief of staff Hussein Rashi again, issued since two years ago.
Iraq’s presidency dilemma is the following:
President Talabani, is a lawyer who has already signed the international condemnation of the death sentences. As a President of the Republic, he leaves the death sentences to his three deputies to sign the orders on his behalf.
Adel Abdul Mahdi repeatedly called for the execution of the three convicted, and he already approved their execution.
The problem for Al-Hashemi is different. He does not have any objection against the death penalty, but he found himself facing a problem related to the death sentences issued against former army officers, his arguments are: 1) their actions are orders given by the former regime, and they are not part of the regime. 2) They are all Sunni Arabs, (and he don’t want to loss the popularity he gained by opposing the election law).
While there is no disagreement on signing the death sentence of Chemical Ali, Maliki’s government and the Supreme Council asked the presidential council to sign the death sentence of the three in one warrant collectively .
Hashemi believes that he has the authority to sign the execution orders, individually and not collectively. He pointed out that (the Presidency) is not obliged to sign the execution of several convicts at one time and one signature.
While INA wants to speed up the execution of Chemical Ali as an achievement for the coming election, Maliki’s election campaign is the execution of former defense minister Sultan Hashim and former chief of staff Hussein Rashid.
This “crisis” started to escalate gradually, and in the coming days we will here more.
